The very naming of the movie got inspiration from the 2003-2004 Hollywood film series Kill Bill.[4] The film is going to be director Shaad Ali's fourth film after Jhoom Barabar Jhoom in 2007, with a gap of 6 years in between. The shooting is scheduled to start from October, 2013 and wrap up by August, 2014.

Casting:
Since the commencing of pre-production, it was announced by Shaad Ali that he was going to feature Ranveer Singh as the male protagonist of his new project. He described Kill Dil as "a film about the tricks the heart plays on an unsuspecting victim of love. Ranveer is pukka for the male lead." There were reports that Deepika Padukone would be playing the female lead as per the filmmaker's wish. However, it was later officially declared that Parineeti Chopra had signed to do that role. After Shikari, Govinda will be doing the role of the antagonist in this film. Ali Zafar, who is chosen to be cast in a supporting role, will be playing the role of a Pakistani boy. Rani Mukherji will team up for Kill Dil opposite Govinda.
